New Zealand Society of Authors – Te Puni Kaituhi O Aotearoa (PEN NZ)
The NZSA is ‘ the principal representative for the professional interests of writers.’ There are eight regional branches: Northland, Auckland, Waitkato, Central Districts, Wellington, Top of the South, Canterbury, Otago/Southland. The NZSA run many professional development programmes and writing awards. The NZSA website regularly posts opportunities for writers. Membership based, the NZSA represents the professional interests of over 1,730 writers, by working closely with industry leaders, government and Creative New Zealand.

A new entity within the NZSA, Ngā Kaituhi Māori, was formed in 2024: see below.
Ngā Kaituhi Māori
Under the leadership of Witi Ihimaera, Ngā Kaituhi Māori was formed with funding from the NZ Society of Authors and the Ministry of Culture & Heritage. It has held regional wānanga and hui, offered online craft masterclasses by and for Māori writers. With the NZSA, its offers the Ngā Kaituhi Māori Mentorship and Kupu Kaitiaki programmes.
KEY DATES
The most recent hui was held in Gisborne in October 2025. The next will be in Motueka in 2026.

Te Hā o Ngā Pou Kaituhi Māori
Te Hā is a contemporary Māori writers group, formed under the umbrella of Toi Māori Aotearoa, the national Māori arts organisation.
There are regional groups for Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington and the South Island, most with Facebook groups.
KEY DATES
A writers’ hui and Zine Fest was held in Lower Hutt in August 2025.

About
Wharerangi means storehouse or raised platform, and this is the site’s kaupapa: to provide a packed storehouse of information for Māori writers of fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry, and a platform for our publications—from a one-off story to a full-length book. Each section supplies information and links for opportunities, including places to read contemporary Māori literature and publish new work.
